MOONBEARS.CO.UK is an informative website to help promote awareness and raise funds for the UK registered charity Animals Asia Foundation. 100% of all proceeds goes straight to the charity.

This site moonbears.co.uk and moonbears.org.uk are run by Julie Stock and Stephen Ashcroft who are trying to raise awareness in the UK about bear bile farming and we gladly welcome all your contributions and ideas towards this website

Nothing had prepared us for what we were about to witness. The anguish and despair on the faces of these poor souls will haunt me forever. The terror, the agony in the harrowing looks that greeted us as the team gently lifted their cages from the backs of the trucks. These majestic animals had been drained of all hope, their lives lived in the absence of all decency

Animals Asia is actively working in China and Vietnam promoting animal welfare. Please support the latest campaign Be a 'Champion for a Change' to alleviate the suffering of China's dogs and cats. Here in the UK, dogs are much more than our best friends - they are part of the family. Sadly this is not the case for most dogs (and cats) throughout China. The grim reality is that China's rising affulence is creating a growing demand for dogs and cats as food.

Animals Asia Foundation have built a China Bear Rescue Sanctuary, first of its kind in the world. An adventurous creation which combines a safe, but natural, home-from-home for the bears in Rehab Centres and bamboo forest, - but which also allows inspirational "up-close" visitor access in specially created "zones", where the general public can see - and experience - life as a bear!

Catering to their special needs are our professional team of on-site managers and workers, plus experts (including volunteers) who are experienced and qualified in working with bears, and who ensure that each day is filled with interesting enrichment activities to keep them stimulated throughout the day.

Mafi, whose name means forgivenes in Hindi, has refused to let her dark past cloud her days in the sun

When Mafi first came she was wracked with anxiety. Stereotypic, she rocked back and forth in her cage, leaving the vet team to prescribe sedative-laced fruit smoothies to give her poor tormented mind some relief.

Today, this gorgeous bear is one of the clowns of the sanctuary, never missing an opportunity for mischief - especially when she has an audience! Her favourite pastime is hanging out on "her" swing, just lapping up the freedom she was denied for so long.

"Eating is everybodys favourite passtime!"

Already, in its formative years, the China Bear Rescue Centre has mushroomed into an inspiring and exciting facility which gives the bears everything they were denied on the farms. Today, happy, healthy bears have unlimited access to tasty food, the pleasure of roaming in lush natural foliage or swimming in cool water, and most importantly of all, the freedom of choosing whether to wander off alone, or to be "on view" to admirers far and wide!

Pitiful, caged newcomers (like Agathon below) are professionally treated and healed by our Veterinary Director and her team, who are now recognised as world experts in caring for previously farmed bears in China.

Agathon arrived in a pitiful state in October 2006, now he plays for hours with his best mate Metty
